Expert Oracle Exadata

Expert Oracle Exadata
By Kerry Osborne , Randy Johnson , Tanel Põder

Throughout history, advances in technology have come in spurts. A single great idea can often spur rapid change as the idea takes hold and is propagated, often in totally unexpected directions. Exadata embodies such a change in how we think about and manage relational databases. The key change lies in the concept of offloading SQL processing to the storage layer. That concept is a huge win, and its implementation in the form of Exadata is truly a game changer.

Expert Oracle Exadata will give you a look under the covers at how the combination of hardware and software that comprise Exadata actually work. Authors Kerry Osborne, Randy Johnson, and Tanel Põder share their real-world experience, gained through multiple Exadata implementations with the goal of opening up the internals of the Exadata platform. This book is intended for readers who want to understand what makes the platform tick and for whom—"how" it does what it is does is as important as what it does. By being exposed to the features that are unique to Exadata, you will gain an understanding of the mechanics that will allow you to fully benefit from the advantages that the platform provides.

Lacuna (Second Attempt), Dread

Lacuna Part 1: The Creation of the Mystery and the Girl from Blue City (second attempt)

Lacuna, as a game, is difficult to define: part sci-fi, part horror, part conspiracy. You play agents who descend into a collective subconscious, Blue City, to hunt criminals. However, Blue City, and the company you work for, have dark secrets.

Lacuna takes place in a dream world built in the collective minds of all humanity. Think Matrix meets Inception.

This is the second "edition" of the game, and includes rules for "Static", along with updated and clarified rules.

Dread

Winner:

ENnie (Special Judges' Award: Gold for Innovation, 2006)
ENnie (Honourable Mention for Best Product, 2006)

Dread (not to be confused with "Dread: The First Book of Pandemonium" [also in this torrent]) is a role playing game, with a twist. It's classic horror survival, but uses no dice. Instead, players use a Jenga tower to represent the game. As the game progresses, players pull blocks from the tower, making it more and more unstable. If a player tips the tower, they die in a horrible and cinematic manner.

The game comes with complete rules, three pre-constructed adventures (with character sheets), and all the information needed to build countless horror campaigns, from aliens to zombies, including madness and terror.

Dread: The First Book of Pandemonium

Dread is described as a modern horror-action game. Written by Rafael Chandler it is published by Neoplastic Press and is only available as a print on demand book from lulu, either as a soft or hardcover, or as a pdf.

PC's in this game have been contacted by a supernatural entity and enlisted in a battle against Demons. Characters have been trained in both magic and combat and are several steps above the average human' abilities. The system is quite traditional in it's approach to magic - there's a set list of spells to choose from and PC's can cast a number of spells equal to twice their Magic score (which is in turn equal to their Soul stat). What is different in this game is the highly evocative descriptions for each spell. The author has pulled out all the stops in his text in this section and it's the first time I can ever remember actualy enjoying reading a spell list.

I grabbed this one as well, and threw it in with the rest. I haven't read through it, and I don't know much ab out it. Let me know what you think!

Paulo Freire

Continuum | 2000 | ISBN 0826412769 | 183 Pages | PDF OCR | 5.6 MB

The methodology of the late Paulo Freire, once considered such a threat to the established order that he was "invited" to leave his native Brazil, has helped to empower countless impoverished and illiterate people throughout the world. Freire's work has taken on special urgency in the United States and Western Europe, where the creation of a permanent underclass among the underprivileged and minorities in cities and urban centers is increasingly accepted as the norm.

With a substantive new introduction to Freire's life and the remarkable impact of this book by writer and Freire confidant and authority Donaldo Macedo, this anniversary edition of Pedagogy of the Oppressed will inspire a new generation of educators, students, and general readers for years to come.

Stealing the network

"Stealing the Network: How to Own the Box is a unique book in the fiction department. It combines stories that are fictional, with technology that is real. While none of the stories have happened, there is no reason why they could not. You could argue it provides a road map for criminal hackers, but I say it does something else: it provides a glimpse into the creative minds of some of today's best hackers, and even the best hackers will tell you that the game is a mental one." - from the Foreword to the first Stealing the Network book, How to Own the Box, Jeff Moss, Founder & Director, Black Hat, Inc. and Founder of DEFCON

For the very first time the complete Stealing the Network epic is available in an enormous, over 1000 page volume complete with the final chapter of the saga and a DVD filled with behind the scenes video footage!

These groundbreaking books created a fictional world of hacker superheroes and villains based on real world technology, tools, and tactics. It is almost as if the authors peered into the future as many of the techniques and scenarios in these books have come to pass.

This book contains all of the material from each of the four books in the Stealing the Network series.

All of the stories and tech from:

How to Own the Box
How to Own a Continent
How to Own an Identity
How to Own a Shadow

What to Eat What to Eat What to Eat

Author(s):Marion Nestle

Format: pdf

ISBN10: 0865477043
Pages: 624

How do we decide what foods to eat? In recent years, this simple question has become complicated beyond belief—as supermarkets have grown to warehouse size, and as the old advice to eat foods from four food groups has been overrun by questions about organic foods, hormones, pesticides, carbohydrates, trans fats, omega-3s, supplements, health claims, extreme diets, and, above all, obesity.

Fortunately, Marion Nestle is here to tell us what’s what—to give us the facts we need to make sensible choices from the bewildering array of foods available to us. With What to Eat, this renowned nutritionist takes us on a guided tour of the supermarket, explaining the issues with verve and wit as well as a scientist’s expertise and a food lover’s experience.

Today’s supermarket is ground zero for the food industry, a place where the giants of agribusiness compete for sales with profits—not nutrition or health—in mind. Nestle walks us through the supermarket, section by section: produce, dairy, meat, fish, packaged foods, breads, juices, bottled waters, and more. Along
the way, she untangles the issues, decodes the labels, clarifies the health claims, and debunks the sales hype. She tells us how to make sensible choices based on freshness, taste, nutrition, health, effects on the environment, and, of course, price. With Nestle as our guide, we learn what it takes to make wise food choices
and are inspired to act with confidence on that knowledge.

What to Eat is the guide to healthy eating today: comprehensive, provocative, revealing, rich in common sense, informative, and a pleasure to read.

Marion Nestle received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the James Beard Foundation—the food world's highest honor—as well as the foundation's book prize. She is the author of Food Politics and Safe Food, and was featured in the documentary Super Size Me. A native of New York, she raised her family in California and now lives in Greenwich Village, where she teaches at New York University.

How should you decide what foods to eat? As supermarkets have grown to warehouse size, this simple question has become complicated beyond belief. Fortunately, Marion Nestle—renowned for her sage advice on food and nutrition—is here to cut through the confusion and lay out what you need to know. In What to Eat, she takes us on a guided tour of the American supermarket and shows us exactly how to feed ourselves and our families wisely and well.

With sharp humor, expertise, and a food-lover's delight, Nestle guides us through the supermarket sections—produce, dairy, meat, fish, breads, and juices, and then to the "center aisles," where big profits are made. Along the way, she reveals the big food companies' marketing practices, explains complex labels in clear language, and tells us what we need to know about:

· wild and farm-raised

· frozen and fresh

· organic, natural, and conventional

· carbs, omega-3s, and trans fats

· pesticides and the environment

· portion size, labeling, and nutrition claims

· supplements, additives, and preservatives

· food safety

"The industry wants you to believe there are no good foods or bad foods. Well, that's not true. And I can't think of anyone who knows the difference better than Marion Nestle."—Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation

"Not only is What to Eat the most comprehensive guide to the political and nutritional choices we make shopping for food, but it's also full of up-to-date research on health."—Susan Salter Reynolds, Los Angeles Times Book Review

"With this comprehensive guide, Nestle, a nutritionist, makes the weekly trip to the grocery less daunting and a healthy diet more attainable."—Science News

"Part muckraking journalism, part reference book and part consumer guide, What to Eat is organized in the manner suggested by the subtitle: as a walk down each grocery store aisle with a companionable Ph. D. researcher as the guide. It is a simple, yet effective, concept for organizing what otherwise could have become a mind-numbing amount of information."—Steve Weinberg, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"When it comes to the increasingly treacherous landscape of the American supermarket, with its marketing hype and competing health claims, Marion Nestle is an absolutely indispensable guide: knowledgeable, eminently sane—and wonderful company, too.”—Michael Pollan, author of The Botany of Desire

"The industry wants you to believe there are no good foods or bad foods. Well, that's not true. And I can't think of anyone who knows the difference better than Marion Nestle."—Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation

"According to nutritionist Nestle, the increasing confusion among the general public about what to eat comes from two sources: experts who fail to create a holistic view by isolating food components and health issues, and a food industry that markets items on the basis of profits alone. She suggests that, often, research findings are deliberately obscure to placate special interests. Nestle says that simple, common-sense guidelines available decades ago still hold true: consume fewer calories, exercise more, eat more fruits and vegetables and, for today's consumers, less junk food. The key to eating well, Nestle advises, is to learn to navigate through the aisles (and thousands of items) in large supermarkets. To that end, she gives readers a virtual tour, highlighting the main concerns of each food group, including baby, health and prepared foods, and supplements. Nestle's prose is informative and entertaining she takes on the role of detective, searching for clues to the puzzle of healthy and satisfying nutrition. Her intelligent and reassuring approach will likely make readers venture more confidently through the jungle of today's super-sized stores."

When Least Is Best (gnv64)

What is the best way to photograph a speeding bullet? Why does light move through glass in the least amount of time possible? How can lost hikers find their way out of a forest? What will rainbows look like in the future? Why do soap bubbles have a shape that gives them the least area?
By combining the mathematical history of extrema with contemporary examples, Paul J. Nahin answers these intriguing questions and more in this engaging and witty volume. He shows how life often works at the extremes with values becoming as small (or as large) as possible and how mathematicians over the centuries have struggled to calculate these problems of minima and maxima. From medieval writings to the development of modern calculus to the current field of optimization, Nahin tells the story of Dido's problem, Fermat and Descartes, Torricelli, Bishop Berkeley, Goldschmidt, and more. Along the way, he explores how to build the shortest bridge possible between two towns, how to shop for garbage bags, how to vary speed during a race, and how to make the perfect basketball shot.
Written in a conversational tone and requiring only an early undergraduate level of mathematical knowledge, When Least Is Best is full of fascinating examples and ready-to-try-at-home experiments. This is the first book on optimization written for a wide audience, and math enthusiasts of all backgrounds will delight in its lively topics.

About the Author
Paul Nahin was born in California, and did all his schooling there (Brea-Olinda High 1958, Stanford BS 1962, Caltech MS 1963, and - as a Howard Hughes Staff Doctoral Fellow - UC/Irvine PhD 1972, with all degrees in electrical engineering). (The lovely lady in the photo is his wife of 49 years, Patricia.) He worked as a digital logic designer and radar systems engineer in the Southern California aerospace industry until 1971, when he started his academic career. He has taught at Harvey Mudd College, the Naval Postgraduate School, and the Universities of New Hampshire (where he is now emeritus professor of electrical engineering) and Virginia. In between and here-and-there he spent a post-doctoral year at the Naval Research Laboratory, and a summer and a year at the Center for Naval Analyses and the Institute for Defense Analyses as a weapon systems analyst, all in Washington, DC. He has published a couple dozen short science fiction stories in ANALOG, OMNI, and TWILIGHT ZONE magazines, and has written 11 books on mathematics and physics, published by IEEE Press, Springer, and the university presses of Johns Hopkins and Princeton.
