I have been dieting for several months now, and lost almost 30 pounds -
but I've gotten to the point where I just can't have another plain, lean
chicken breast and no-flavor veggies for one more meal! I decided to just go to
counting calories for a while, and have promised myself to stay within 1200
calories per day - but with my regular cookbooks, I realized early on that this
would be a daunting task. But then I found the Cook Yourself Thin cookbooks and
decided to give them a try.
They are AMAZING!!! You cook with real food (no
fake sugar & processed foods), and the taste is AWESOME!!! My favorite dish
from this book (so far) is the Brown Butter Cobbler (made with real brown
sugar, butter, apples & a few other ingredients) - with a calorie count in
the 300's for this dessert, you get a lot of bang for your caloric buck (smile)
- and it feels like you are indulging in a major cheat, yet it is easy to find
a combination of meal & starter recipes to fill out the day, still coming
under 1200 calories. *Note: this is the 2nd highest calorie count of all the
dessert recipes in this book - most are much lower.
This book also includes several full color
pictures of the recipes, which is really a nice touch - as well as several
testimonials from people who lost weight & dress sizes from eating only
recipes in the Cook Yourself Thin series.
I also started watching the Cook Yourself Thin
show on t.v. - it is great to see how they help people who crave fast food and
other high fat/high calorie comfort foods by creating similar tasting recipes
that have greatly slashed the calories and fat. They cook the food right there
and you can see the first reaction of the person they are cooking for when they
take that first bite - and it is always a look of yummy surprise.
Another positive is that all of the recipes have
easy to find ingredients, unlike some similar cookbooks.
Overall, I would highly recommend this cookbook to
anyone trying to lose weight, as well as those who are looking for recipes to
help them maintain their current weight - either way you'll find easy, great
tasting recipes to keep you moving in the right direction!

According to the introduction, "Cook Yourself
Thin" by Lifetime Television is not a diet manual, but a cook book aimed at
providing delicious recipes that help you lose weight. The colorful book is
divided into sections like Breakfast, Starters, Mains, Sides/Soups/Salads, and
Dessert. Each recipe includes the serving size and nutrients information, along
with the list of ingredients and step-by-step instructions. About half of the
recipes are accompanied by pictures.
Judging from the book's title, I was curious but
initially prepared for standard veggie recipes and uninspiring meals that
focused more on losing weight than wetting the appetite. However, I was
pleasantly surprised to discover that the majority of the recipes sounded
exactly as promised--delicious. Examples of the recipes included were hot
wings, pineapple mojito, strawberry shortcake, white pizza with roasted
mushrooms, spaghetti surprise, BBQ salmon, new greek salad, mini blueberry
muffins, cheese fries, chocolate volcano cake, violet smoothie, chicken cordon
bleu, tiramisu, and many more.
I like the fact that most of the above food is
definitely not something you would associate with dieting. As explained by the
book, however, the key to losing weight wasn't depriving yourself of food, but
adjusting the ingredients and controlling the amount you consume. The recipes
themselves tend to stay on the short side. The less time-consuming ones have a
lightning icon drawn next to them.
An added bonus is a special section at the end of
the book, called "Menus," were recipes from the book along with their
page numbers are organized into different categories like Girl's Night Out,
Romantic Dinner for Two, Brunch, Game Night, Sunday Night Supper, Italian,
Breakfast for Dinner, and etc. Overall, an impressive book.
